What is the end purpose of this Ubuntu .iso file?

VirtualBox does support DMG files. As you can see in my screenshot, when browsing from the VirtualBox medium finder, Explorer lists DMG in the 'supported file types' section. The supported file-types section gets its' information from the Windows file associations that are set when you install a program. Open and mount it in Disk Utility, and then burn it to a Ubuntu installation DVD. In the terminal, use dd(1) to perform a bit/bit copy to existing drive partition or bootable USB stick = 8GB. Use as guest installation media for one of the Virtualization packages (e.g. Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox).

If you haven't already, please run Disk Utility, and verify/repair permissions on your boot drive. Can you now double-click on .dmg files and these mount normally? If yes, skip to .iso discussion.

If double-clicking a .dmg still does not work, perform a Get Info (shift+i) on any selected .dmg file. In the Get Info panel, under Open with, what application appears by default? It should be DiskImageMounter.


If it is already set to DiskImageMounter, then there is another issue in the operating system. Do bother with the following.


Otherwise, follow these steps to make DiskImageMounter the default for .dmg files:


  1. In the Open With selection, choose Other... a file chooser will appear.
  2. On the left Finder panel under Devices, the top device icon should be your computer name. Select it.
  3. Several icons appear. Choose the one representing your machines hard disk.
    1. Then select System > Library > CoreServices > DiskImageMounter
    2. Add
  4. On the Open With menu, choose DiskImageMounter.
  5. Once Open with indicates DiskImageMounter

    Check Use this application to open all documents like this one.


Now, .dmg should open and mount to the desktop normally.

I was able to reproduce your error message when attempting to open the Ubuntu iso. The reason is two-fold. This is a compressed operating system image file, and the default application (DiskImageMounter) that tries to open and mount it to the desktop can't deal with it.


There are three things you can do with this .iso file:


  1. Open and mount it in Disk Utility, and then burn it to a Ubuntu installation DVD.
  2. In the terminal, use dd(1) to perform a bit/bit copy to existing drive partition or bootable USB stick >= 8GB.
  3. Use as guest installation media for one of the Virtualization packages (e.g. Parallels, VMware, VirtualBox).
